Buckmore Park were delighted to be the chosen circuit for the recent Hydraquip sponsored Karting for Heroes charity event. The event was designed to raise money for our brave men and women in the front line in various places around the globe. Twenty teams participated in a three hour team endurance in sweltering heat as the temperature hit 26 degrees.
The event attracted some big names as well as radio and TV coverage. Lance Corporal Matt Croucher GC was in attendance and proved to be just as brave on the circuit as he was in Afghanistan! He was awarded the George Cross after an incident in 2008 where he threw himself onto a booby trapped Taliban grenade to save his colleagues. Buckmore is a pretty enough place in June anyway but it was further beautified by the presence of Lance Corporal Katrina Hodge, better known as Miss England 2009. She was accompanied by a further bevvy of beauties who raced under the team name Miss London.
Teams had set up ‘Just for Giving’ website pages and used all sorts of other means to attract sponsorship for this worthwhile event. The extent of their efforts became clear when the results of the ‘bid for grid’ was announced. The sum exceeded £4000! It broke the previous Buckmore record of £3,700 that had been set as recently as the week before at another charity event. With a busy raffle and an auction with some impressive donated items a whole lot more was raised and the final total will be announced in due course but is likely to exceed even the wildest hopes of the organiser Mt Geoff Kelley of Braided Hose Specialists Hydraquip.
Raising money for charity has never been such fun!
